Odour nuisance in Tienen: situation update

We are aware that the odour nuisance experienced in recent days is unpleasant and has an impact on the daily lives of local residents. We are sorry that residents are experiencing this nuisance. We have received more reports in recent days and take each of them seriously. Thank you for using the reporting form on our website. We know that our settling ponds can be a source of odours and that some of the reports are related to them. At the same time, we are receiving reports from different parts of the surrounding area, and we cannot attribute every report to our activities.

The recent period has been exceptionally warm and dry for this time of year. These weather conditions can influence the formation and dispersion of odours around our settling ponds. The low water level and high temperatures can cause the organic matter in our ponds to release more odours. We are continuing to investigate the extent to which these conditions contribute to the recent odour nuisance.

With the start of the beet campaign, the ponds are being replenished with water. We expect this to help reduce odour formation in the short term. We have also invested in a new lime treatment installation, which helps us better control the composition of the water in the ponds and thereby limit odour formation.

We are closely monitoring the situation, both with external odour observers and with our own employees. They check the ponds and the surrounding area and record their observations.

Over the past few years, we have taken various measures to limit odour formation and its potential impact on the surrounding area. We will therefore continue to investigate the source of the reported odour nuisance and take additional measures where necessary.
