Our organisation

Raffinerie Tirlemontoise  is the market leader in Belgium and has several branches dotted around the country. It employs a total of about 600 people.

We produce sugar for industry (mainly bulk sugar) and for every day consumption (icing sugar, brown sugar, etc.), as well as for Belgium, for the EU market and the world market. No single part of the sugar beet is discarded in these processes: all the by-products of sugar production are used and given a second life in different agricultural processes.

Daily management is done by the executive Committee of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise and is composed by:

Since 1989, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise is part of the Südzucker group, which is a European food concern. Südzucker has over 16,000 employees.

The Südzucker group produces more than just sugar. The core activities of this European food company also include the production of bio-ethanol, fruit preparations and other products. You can find more information in the table below and on the Südzucker website.

In Belgium, bioethanol sis being produced in BioWanze. This factory was built in the beginning of the 21st century and is almost totally self-sufficient in its energy production, thereby reducing its CO2 footprint with over 70% compared to fossil fuels. Raffinerie Tirlemontoise has invested more than 250 million Euros into the this factory and delivers one of its by-products to it as a raw material: molasse.

Südzuckers "functional foods" activity groep Beneo is specialized in the extraction of inulin and oligofructose out of chicory. Here also, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise has its role as it started Orafti which later was integrated into Beneo.
