At Raffinerie Tirlemontoise we have been investing in sustainability for years. Whether on the field or inside the factory, we critically review our processes to limit the ecological impact as much as possible. In this article we take you through the steps we take for a more sustainable production of beet sugar.
Local beet cultivation: short chain, less transport
It all starts with our local farmers. The sugar beets we process are grown within 50 kilometre radius around our factories. This local approach keeps transport distances short, which is not only more efficient, but also reduces CO₂ emissions.
In addition, the beets are partially cleared of soil while still in the field. This means that less weight needs to be transported – which reduces transportation and therefore fuel consumption.
Smart use of water
Sugar beets consist of 75% water. In our factories, we recover that water during the production process. The water that comes from the beets is reused – for instance to wash new batches of beets. This way, we significantly limit our use of fresh tap water.
Everything from the beet
Beet processing is not just about sugar. We strive for a circular approach in which every part of the beet is put to good use. For example, the remaining beet pulp is processed into animal feed. This way, nothing is wasted and we get the most out of every harvested beet.
Energy is a challenge and a priority
Sugar production is energy-intensive. That is why we are continuously investing in new technologies to make our processes more efficient and sustainable.
In 2023, we installed a new diffusion tower, which ensures energy-efficient extraction of sugar from the beets. Thanks to this innovation, we save a lot on energy consumption, which significantly reduces our CO₂ emissions.
Another important milestone is the introduction of a unique industrial heat pump, officially put into use on 19 February 2025. With a thermal capacity of 4 megawatts, this installation can heat air and water up to 140°C. Thanks to this technology, industrial residual heat, which would otherwise be lost, is reused in the production process.
This heat pump significantly increases the energy efficiency of our factory in Tienen. It fits perfectly within our circular ambitions and is part of the European SPIRIT project. It is also a first for Europe – a prime example of sustainable innovation in the food industry.
Always improving
Sustainable production is not a final destination, but a lasting commitment. We continue to invest in technology, collaboration with local farmers, and the more efficient use of resources. This is how we work together on future-proof, circular, and climate-friendly sugar production.
